|Drinking Start Year||2016|
The Harvest of 2012 marked a very special vintage for Privato Vineyard and Winery. Excitement was high in the winery that year as we knew we had a vintage bearing exceptional quality fruit. It was not until the Spring 2014, some 18 months later, that we decided to choose a very special wine from the best of the best. The grapes were hand harvested on October 27, 2012. A luscious cold soak of six full days on the skins was allowed prior to fermentation being initiated. After 10 days of fermentation, the grapes were ever so gently pressed and then transferred to French oak barriques where it aged for 18 long and patient months. At the end of the 18 months, there was no doubt in our minds that our grapes from the Rise Vineyard in Vernon were exceptional. We bottled the wine and as with ALL our Woodward Family Collection series it was laid down to rest for a further 12 months. Releasing in the Summer of 2015, this wine rose to stardom very quickly after winning not just GOLD but DOUBLE GOLD in the 2015 All Canadian Wine Championships making it THE BEST Pinot Noir in its class in Canada. Sadly this wine was soon to be sold out. But, all was not lost. What most folks were unaware of is that we reserved 8 of the best barriques of this vintage. In fact we invited our wine club members to join us in a barrel sampling to help choose the best of the best - what fun that was. We wanted this wine to be a TRUE reserve which by European standards requires it to be aged a full three years. By the time we release this wine in May 2016, it will have aged for 42 months.
Richly extracted aromas of black currents, warm cherries, violets and black plums.
On the palate, dark cherry flavors mingle with a touch of mocha and sweet toasty oak while firm tannins will soften when decantered. A lovely structured balance of acidity and sweet oak lingers leaving you wanting more.
Pinot Noir is well known for being very food friendly and thus a favorite for many foodies. It pairs perfectly with a wide variety of food because of it’s lovely acidity, it’s complexity and often times rich fruit character. This 12 Grande Reserve is easily paired with a delicately prepared salmon, a lovely sausage, pesto and arugula wood-fired pizza or a richly prepared Beef Bourguignon.
