Elegant, bright, and complex. Medium to full bodied with red berry fruit characters, slightly gripping tannins, and just enough acidity to keep the wine refreshing. Classic match for any grilled or braised meat.
On the lower side of Black Sage Road between Oliver and Osoyoos, this vineyard has a gentle West facing slope. The soils are a dense loam with limestone (calcium carbonate) covered granite cobbles throughout a deep profile. With the rough surface of the calcium carbonate, water stressed vine roots seek out these rocks for the small amount of water to be found on this surface.
This wine is a barrel selection from Merlot harvested on Oct. 18 and Cabernet Franc harvested Oct. 21. Average maceration time was 22 days in 2 ton open top fermenters, using punch downs twice daily. Alcoholic and malolactic fermentation was done by the indigenous yeast and bacteria of the vineyard. Fermentation temperatures were typically at 22-25 deg. C. Each fermenter was basket pressed directly to neutral oak barrels for completion of fermentation. No other treatment other than monthly topping was done until April, 2014 when the barrels were racked and the wine blended for bottling.
