The Estate Reserve represents Clos du Soleil's top tier of wine, and is a pure expression of a single terroir: our Estate Vineyard on the Upper Bench of Keremeos, in the Similkameen Valley. Very few barrels barrels of this wine are ever produced - a true collector's item.
The vintage was a long and moderate season. The harvest started in early October and stretched right into November. This allowed the late-ripening varieties more time to reach phenolic maturity without allowing sugar levels to get too high. All of the fruit was hand-harvested with each varietal harvested separately, vinified separately, and matured separately. Gentle gravity-fed handling and an exacting eye for detail in the winery in order to achieve a balanced level of extraction was the key to producing this wine. After gentle pressing, the wine was matured for 17 months in 100% French oak barrels. This wine is unfined and unfiltered.
On the nose the wines offers a blend of blackberry and black currant, raspberry, with notes of cedar-tinged undergrowth and hints of violet.
On the palate the wine is fresh, lively, and complex without any heaviness. The taster is greeted with fresh, ripe fruit flavours of raspberry and black currant which evolves into spicy notes of black pepper and a certain stony quality on the finish. The structure is built on very fine tannins which gives the wine a feeling of elegance.
