An OCULUS was first used by the Romans in buildings like the Pantheon - a window in a dome or wall to the outside. At Mission Hill, our oculus provides the only natural light into our underground barrel cellar, blasted out of volcanic rock that is otherwise hidden from the world. Our complex Oculus Bordeaux-style wine is the result of meticulous selection in the vineyard estate with grapes that have been specifically nurtured for this rare wine.
The 2005 vintage of Oculus is Mission Hill Family Estate’s premier wine release to date. This wine reflects long term viticultural and winemaking improvements that Chief Winemaker John Simes has carefully implemented.
The 2005 vintage was low-yielding, producing fruit with exceptional concentration. This has enabled us to craft a truly classic wine with layers of opulent fruit, velvety mouthfeel, silky tannins, and impressive length.

The wine begins with gorgeous aromas of blackberry, cherry and mineral.
These notes build on the palate with toasty spice and a dusting of chocolate and earthiness, adding textural depth and complexity. The wine is full-bodied, with ultra-fine tannins and a long, seamless finish.
