Our Gravelbourg Chardonnay has become a benchmark of rich, full South Valley Chardonnay. Consistently showing notes of crème caramel, honey and minerality intermeshing to create a stunning and truly memorable Chardonnay.
Golden in colour, the wine displays notes of lemon zest, golden delicious apple, nashi pear, honeycomb, vanilla and butterscotch. On the palate, the flavours intensify and are contained in a frame that gives the wine a full, round, soft and rich texture. This is a decadent, textural chardonnay that commands your attention from the first to the last glass.
2008 was a challenging and unpredictable vintage. Budbreak was late, and parts of the valley saw snow as late as April 19th. However, the silver lining was that the late budbreak probably protected against the late April frosts we experienced. By mid June, the vines were flowering and started making up lost time. July was hot and dry, and August to October were exceptional. So despite a late start, 2008 produced some fantastic wines.
The grapes for this wine were picked from the Gravelbourg on the Black Sage Bench. The fruit was hand picked, hand sorted, whole-bunch pressed, and fermented slowly at cooler temperatures to ensure maximum retention of delicate aromatics. When the fermentation was about 80% complete, the wine was transferred to a mixture of French oak barrels and allowed to warm up and complete fermentation. The lees were stirred regularly for 11 months to build body and texture in the wine.
